Class Enrollment
Other Departments’ Classes
Please note that the information offered on this page is valid for all classes offered by the Department of English and American Studies only (i.e. all classes in English and American cultural studies, linguistics, and literary studies. While enrollment for other departments’ classes may be similar it will almost certainly also differ in some aspects.
Before you may attend a class, you must enroll in it on StudOn via Campo. For further information on how to navigate Campo, please see these guides for students. For further information on how to find classes on Campo or StudOn and how to register for them, please also see this guide (in German). To find out which modules/classes to enroll in at which point during your course of study, please refer to the information offered for your degree program on this website.
Enrollment Period
If not announced otherwise, enrollment for all classes starts on April 1, 8 am for the summer term and on October 1, 8 am for the winter term. The first 24 hours of enrollment are set up as an equal opportunity phase for all classes except lectures, i.e. if during this time more students sign up for a class than seats are available, participants will be selected via lottery. Deadline for enrollment is always the Saturday after the first week of classes, 10 pm. Joining a class after this deadline is only possible, if the lecturer of the class registers you for it. Therefore, if you wish to sign up for a class after the enrollment period, you must contact the course lecturer directly. If you have decided not to attend a class after all, please disenroll from that class to make your spot available for other students.
Class Balancing
For some courses—most Grundseminare, Aufbauseminare, and Lektüreseminare, as well as some other classes—we rely on StudOn’s balancing mechanism (“kombinierte Anmeldung”) for an even distribution of students. Because of that you cannot sign up directly for these classes; instead, you must select which of the offered classes you would prefer to take. Admission will be on a rolling basis: after 24 hours and then at the end of every week before the first week of classes, all students signed up for these classes will be distributed among them according to their preferences. After that, students who still need to register for these courses may sign up for them directly where seats are still available.
Missing Prerequisites
Should StudOn warn you that you do not fulfill the necessary prerequisites (“Voraussetzungen nicht erfüllt”), you may still apply on StudOn to be signed up for the class by its lecturer (“Aufnahmeantrag stellen”). In the application, please state briefly and to your best knowledge, why you are not fulfilling the prerequisites (e.g., because the grade of a summer term class has not been entered on Campo yet or because you failed a class). Lecturers will decide whether to admit or reject you based on this statement.
